7 frequently asked locksmith questions

by John Barber

Locksmiths have pretty much existed since ancient times. Keys can be traced back hundreds of years and have massive significance throughout history. But even then, there are a lot of people that don’t really know a lot about locksmiths. In this post, we’re going to be answering 7 of the most frequently asked locksmith questions to help you understand what a locksmith can really do!

  1. Does a locksmith only deal with house locks?

We don’t usually think of locksmiths, but when we do, it’s often because we’re locked out of our homes. What a lot of people don’t know is that locksmiths don’t just deal with house locks, but also automobiles, safes, and pretty much any other thing that has a lock on it! You’ve got it, they can break through it!

  1. Can a locksmith make a new key fob?

In recent years, we’ve moved away from cars that have the more “traditional locks” and are seeing more and more keyless entry cars pop up. They’re extremely convenient, well, as long as your key fob is functioning properly! Key fobs can end up breaking down on your when you least expect it, but the great news is that locksmiths can fix or make a brand new keyfob if you need it! It’s a type of key after all!

  1. Is it necessary to break a lock to open a door?

A lot of people think that if their lock is stuck, the only way to get through it is to break the lock entirely. That’s not the case at all, quite the opposite. In most cases, granted you have a skilled locksmith, you’ll be able to make it to the other side of the door without having to destroy the lock that’s holding everything together! The only time a lock has to be broken is when it’s the absolute last resort.

  1. Can I change the lock myself?

With so many tutorials on the internet and the number of instructions almost every product comes with, you might have the urge to just go to town with your locks on your own. However, that could go very wrong if you don’t really feel super confident in your handyman skills. If you’re working with an expensive lock that you don’t want to damage, or just don’t think you’ll be able to put it together right, it’s better to skip the DIY here and call a locksmith instead!

  1. Do locksmiths answer emergency calls?

While most locksmiths nowadays are available 24/7, there are some locksmiths that only operate during daytime hours. It’s extremely important that you keep the contact information of at least one emergency locksmith in your area just in case you end up landing into trouble and don’t know who to call!

  1. Do I need a key to make spare keys?

A lot of people think that the only way you can get keys is if you have a physical key with you. That was the case back in the day, but not anymore! Now you can even get a key made with nothing but a photograph of the original key! If your lock is super valuable to you, you can even give the locksmith access to the lock to create a matching key with it! So no, tracing the original key isn’t the only way to make spare keys.

  1. How do I find the best locksmith in my area?

Finally, the big problem – finding the right locksmith. You can start the hunt by googling the word locksmith with your area next to it, like Locksmith LA, and click on the business with the most positive reviews. The other way to find a great locksmith is by trying the old-fashioned way and asking around your area! Either way, the better their reviews, the more reliable they’ll be!
