10 Ways to Stay Motivated When Working Toward a Goal

by John Barber

It can be difficult to stay motivated when you are working toward a goal. How do you keep yourself going when the days go by and nothing seems to change? How do you push through the frustration that comes with obstacles? How do you maintain your willpower despite adversity, criticism, and setbacks? How do you avoid getting too discouraged or giving up altogether?

These are all excellent questions for which there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Every individual’s journey toward their goals will look different, so it’s important not to compare yourself to others or assume that what worked for them will work for you. But here are some general suggestions that might help…

Tips on How to Stay Motivated:

– Create a daily or weekly routine. Make specific plans for each day of the week, and if you find yourself slipping up one day, plan more activities into your schedule so that it’s harder for boredom or laziness to set in. By committing yourself to something every single day, you are creating good habits rather than waiting around until motivation strikes again. This is also an excellent way to ensure that progress continues despite obstacles because even when life gets busy with work or family obligations, you can make time for whatever activity helps keep you motivated toward your goal.

– Surround yourself with motivational words and images. Perhaps it’s a picture that perfectly represents your end goal. Or, maybe, it’s a motivational quote that inspires you. Having these visual reminders that what you are working toward is achievable will help you stay positive and motivated.

– Set manageable goals along the way as well as long-term ones – this will prevent burnout at any point and make it easier to stay motivated.

– Find a motivation buddy or join an online community of others who are working toward the same goal as you (such as on Reddit, with subreddits like r/loseit for those trying to lose weight or gain muscle). It’s much harder to quit when someone else is counting on you!

– Find ways to make your goal fun or interesting. How can you turn it into a game, challenge yourself by setting specific rules for the activity (such as only using dumbbells under 20 pounds), use activities that are related to your hobby to get extra motivated, etc.?

– Track your progress regularly – whether this is with photos or measurements rather than just on paper. You will feel more accomplished when you see how far you’ve come!

– Reward yourself frequently so that even if reaching the larger milestone takes longer than expected, there’s always something positive waiting at the end of each step along the way. This could be anything from treating yourself to takeout after every few workouts…or simply allowing yourself an hour of Netflix after a week of staying on track.

– Find something that drives you emotionally rather than just focusing on the physical aspect – whether it’s wanting to look better, feel healthier, spend more time with family or friends, etc. How can you tie your goal into what ultimately matters most in life? How do you want to benefit from reaching this particular milestone? Once your purpose has been established and underlying motivators have been identified, finding motivation becomes much easier!

– Surround yourself with supportive individuals in real life as well as online who will help motivate you when things get difficult. They don’t necessarily even need to know about your goals but having them cheer for you along the way is always encouraging! When others recognize how hard you’re working and how much you’ve accomplished, it’s a great feeling.

– Remember why your goal is important – even if this means going back to the drawing board and revising what needs revising rather than continuing as planned! How can you adjust so that reaching your ultimate destination becomes easier? How do you need to change course to maintain motivation until success comes within reach? Being able to adapt when needed will help keep those motivational fires burning brightly no matter where life takes us next.

It’s not easy to stay motivated. But if you keep yourself going, you will be surprised how much progress you can make!
